Here's the thing: a book without readers is just so much paper and paste. An author needs fans in the same way that a musician or an actor needs fans. The reason radio and television are still free is because it creates fans (it's not because of advertising; that's just a vicious rumour.)
My book will need fans to be a raving success. Just like with radio and TV, the answer is to give it away free. Here's how this'll work:
Some of the book is online now. Free. Sign up for my very infrequent newsletter, and I'll let you know when a new chapter has been posted.
Read it. If you like it, and you'd like to read the next chapter (for free) get your friends to read it. Once I've gotten 10 readers signed up from each chapter, I'll post the next one. To unlock Chapter Three, I want to see 20 readers for Chapter Two. That means the 10 folks who read Chapter One originally, plus 10 more who joined them.
More readers, more chapters.
Keep it up, and read the whole book free.

Of course, at some point the book will be in print and you can skip this whole process and just buy a copy of the book. Or, you can keep spreading the word and reading it free; your choice.
